Transition Planning
What is Transition Planning?
Farm transition planning is the process of preparing for the transfer of farm management, ownership, and assets from one generation or party to another. This includes developing strategies for financial arrangements, legal transfers, knowledge sharing, and ensuring business continuity while addressing the needs and goals of all parties involved. This process can also be called succession planning.
Over the next decade, approximately 1000 Wellington County farms are anticipated to transition management or ownership.
This period of change will impact not only primary farming businesses, but also the suppliers of inputs, marketing and processing for these farms. Yet, according to the 2021 census, 10.5% of Wellington County farms – just 276 - had a written plan to navigate these future changes.
Whether you're planning to pass your farm to family, sell to employees, or find outside buyers, having a clear transition plan protects your legacy and ensures your operation's continued success.

Your Farm, Your Future
That's why we created Your Farm, Your Future. This easy-to-use guidebook will help farms navigate the conversations around succession planning and specific considerations around three scenarios:
- Outgoing generation with a family successor
- Outgoing generation without a family successor
- Incoming generation in a non-family succession
Remember that succession happens in steps, and it can be helpful to engage with professionals during this process. Your Farm, Your Future was created in consultation with the professionals at Farmer's Bridge and Loft32. Plan ahead, plan well.
